ViaLite RF over Fiber Links for Former Cold War Earth Station

The earth station at Raisting in Germany has a distinguished history, having played a part in the cold war and carried live images of the first moon landing.  When the owners EMC Satcom Technologies decided to modernize two additional antennas as part of a continuing upgrade of the facility, they turned to ViaLite Communications for ViaLiteHD RF over fiber equipment to carry the satellite signals to the main control room.

Raisting is EMC’s flagship teleport facility in Europe.  It has 18 large antennas, up to 32 m in diameter, landing C, Ku, Ka, X and L-Band traffic.  The earth station provides coverage for the Americas, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia using all the major satellite operators.

“The Raisting earth station has a fascinating history,” said Gary Wade, Product Manager at ViaLite.  “Commissioned by the West German Post Office in 1964, it provided part of the direct telephone hotline between the Kremlin and the White House during the cold war.”
