RF over Fiber in the Management of Telecom and Secure Communications

The Federal Aviation Association (FAA) is using ViaLite RF over fiber links to connect communications equipment between antennas and operational facilities where the distance between them does not allow for traditional coax to be implemented.

A ViaLite 3U Rack Chassis system was chosen to house the RF links; accepting up to 13 RF or Support cards per chassis, along with an SNMP card and dual power supplies. The system ensures five nines reliability at all times, which is a requirement in this environment.

The ViaLite system allows the RF signals to travel long distances with minimal loss and eliminates the need for gain slope compensation.  ViaLite received feedback that the system was easy to design in, exceeded performance expectations and that the startup was quick and without complication.

The FAA regulates all aspects of civil aviation, including the construction and operation of airports, and the management of air traffic, as well as telecom and secure communications.

Craig Somach, ViaLite Director of Sales, worked closely with the association to ensure the RF links met the stringent requirements set out by the aerospace industry and the installation, which occurred in a challenging outdoors environment, ran exactly to plan.
