ViaLite’s GPS Over Fiber Links Enhance Cutting Edge Lab Facility
Essential for timing and synchronization applications, ViaLite’s GPS over fiber links have successfully been integrated into the European Space Agency’s latest laboratory facility in the Netherlands. The new facility, dedicated to the testing of GPS/GNSS systems, antennas, and the development of navigational equipment, has been equipped with state-of-the-art technology to ensure precise and reliable testing capabilities.
The comprehensive package, which included not only the provision of cutting-edge GPS over fiber links but also the installation and setup of all fiber connections within the facility, has ensured a seamless integration process, enabling ESA to focus on its core objectives without the hassle of managing complex infrastructure installations.
Commenting on the successful deployment of ViaLite’s GPS over fiber links, ESA’s GPS/GNSS Engineering Manager expressed satisfaction with the complete solution provided: “A complete solution designed and installed professionally by ViaLite“.
One of the key challenges in the testing environment was maintaining consistent satellite connectivity for lab testing purposes. Thanks to ViaLite’s GPS over fiber links, this challenge was effectively addressed, with each link locking onto over 20 satellites per connection. This robust satellite connectivity provided the foundation for accurate and reliable testing of GPS/GNSS systems and antennas within the lab.
The ViaLite GPS link has been designed with very low noise and a lower minimum signal level, allowing for very low level signals to be transported from the antenna.
The ability to support different voltage antennas and provide full monitoring and control of multiple antennas from a single chassis via a user-friendly web GUI interface was a highly desirable feature. With 13 slots available, the facility boasts expansion capabilities to support additional antennas as needed, ensuring scalability to accommodate future growth and evolving testing requirements.
Amair Khan,ViaLite’s Business Development Manager also highlighted the benefits of the solution implemented at ESA’s facility: “The deployment of GPS over fiber links has further transformed ESA’s state of the art lab facility by ensuring lossless GPS/GNSS signals from every antenna connected over fiber. We have provided ESA with the ability to perform accurate and reliable testing without the limitations of traditional coaxial cables.”
This successful collaboration underscores the importance of advanced timing and synchronization solutions in the development and testing of GPS/GNSS technology.
